In 1967, a group of Pakistani high school kids designed the above-seen car all on their own. Dubbed as ‘The first car made in Pakistan,’ the car soon vanished from the country’s memory but the students all ended up getting scholarships to prestigious American engineering universities.

Karachi’s ‘Three Swords’ area in 1974. It was ‘beautified’ during the Bhutto regime but today has become a busy and congested artery connecting Clifton with the centre of the city. It was during the Bhutto government that the city’s first three-lane roads were constructed (Shara-e-Faisal), dotted with trees; the Clifton area was further beautified; foundation of the country’s first steel mill laid (in Karachi); and the construction of a large casino started (near the shores of the Clifton Beach) to accommodate the ever-growing traffic of European, American and Arab tourists

Karachi’s congested Merewether Tower area in 1976. A badly managed economy (through haphazard nationalisation), and the reluctance of the private sector to invest in the city’s once thriving businesses strengthened the unregulated aspects of a growing informal economy that began to serve the needs of the city’s population. The flip side of this informal economic enterprise was the creeping corruption in the police and other government institutions that began to extort money from these unfettered and informal businesses.

قیام پاکستان کے بعد پہلی نماز عید الاضحیٰ، قائد اعظم کی زندگی کا ایک واقعہ، جو تاریخ کی نظروں سے اوجھل ہے
یہ 25 اکتوبر 1947 کی بات ہے۔ قیام پاکستان کے بعد پہلی بار عید الاضحیٰ کا تہوار منایا جانا تھا۔ قائد اعظم اور دیگر سرکاری عمائدین نے 18 اگست 1947 کو عیدالفطر کی نماز وفاقی دارالحکومت میں بندر روڈ پر مولوی مسافر خانہ کے نزدیک مسجد قصاباں میں ادا کی تھی جو عیدگاہ کے نام سے بھی معروف تھی۔ اس نماز کی امامت فریضہ مشہور عالم دین مولانا ظہور الحسن درس نے انجام دیے تھے۔ 25 اکتوبر 1947 کو عید الاضحیٰ کی نماز کی ادائی کے لیے بھی اسی مقام کا انتخاب ہوا۔ اس مرتبہ بھی امامت کا فریضہ مولانا ظہور الحسن درس کے حصے میں آنا تھا۔
قائد اعظم کو نماز کے وقت سے مطلع کردیا گیا۔ لیکن تمام لوگ اس وقت بڑے حیران ہوئے جب نماز کا وقت آگیا مگر قائد اعظم عید گاہ نہیں پہنچ پائے۔ اعلیٰ حکام نے مولانا ظہور الحسن درس کو مطلع کیا کہ قائد اعظم راستے میں ہیں اور چند ہی لمحات میں عید گاہ پہنچنے والے ہیں۔ انہوں نے مولانا سے درخواست کی کہ وہ نمازکی ادائی کچھ وقت کے لیے مؤخر کردیں۔ مولانا ظہور الحسن درس نے فرمایا ’’میں قائد اعظم کے لیے نماز پڑھانے نہیں آیا ہوں بلکہ خدائے عزوجل کی نماز پڑھانے آیا ہوں‘‘ چناں چہ انہوں نے صفوں کو درست کرکے تکبیر فرما دی۔
ابھی نماز عید کی پہلی رکعت شروع ہوئی ہی تھی کہ اتنے میں قائد اعظم بھی عید گاہ پہنچ گئے۔ نماز شروع ہوچکی تھی۔ قائد اعظم کے منتظر اعلیٰ حکام نے قائد سے درخواست کی وہ اگلی صف میں تشریف لے چلیں مگر قائد اعظم نے ان کی درخواست مسترد کردی اور کہا کہ میں پچھلی صف میں ہی نماز ادا کروں گا۔ چناں چہ ایسا ہی ہوا اور قائد اعظم نے پچھلی صفوں میں نماز ادا کی۔ قائد اعظم کے برابر کھڑے نمازیوں کو بھی نماز کے بعد علم ہُوا کہ ان کے برابر میں نماز ادا کرنے والا ریاست کا کوئی عام شہری نہیں بلکہ ریاست کا سربراہ تھا۔
نماز کے بعد جب نمازیوں کے علم میں یہ بات آئی پوری عید گاہ قائد اعظم زندہ باد کے نعروں سے گونج اٹھی۔ قائد اعظم نمازیوں سے گلے ملنے کے بعد آگے تشریف لائے۔ انھوں نے مولانا ظہور الحسن درس کی جرأت ایمانی کی تعریف کی اور کہا کہ ہمارے علما کو ایسے ہی کردار کا حامل ہونا چاہیے۔
مولانا ظہور الحسن درس 9 فروری 1905 کو کراچی میں مولانا عبدالکریم درس کے ہاں پیدا ہوئے تھے۔ آپ 1940 سے 1947 تک آل انڈیا مسلم لیگ کونسل کے رکن اور اہم عہدوں پر فائز رہے۔ قائداعظم آپ کو سندھ کا بہادر یارجنگ کہا کرتے تھے۔ مولانا ظہور الحسن درس نے 14 نومبر 1972 کو کراچی میں وفات پائی اور قبرستان مخدوم صاحب نزد دھوبی گھاٹ میں آسودۂ خاک ہوئے۔ آپ کئی کتابوں کے مصنف تھے۔ جن میں چشم تلطف پنجتن‘ خون کے آنسو اور تحقیق الفقہ اما فی کلمتہ الحق کے نام سرفہرست ہیں۔

A 1973 PIA brochure promoting tourism to the site of one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Mohenjodaro (located in the Sindh province of Pakistan). In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the tourist traffic from abroad and from within Pakistan to Mohenjodaro grew rapidly, so much so that the government built an airport, rest houses and small hotels near the site and began running regular flights there. However, ever since the 1990s, the number of tourists to the site steadily declined and so did the number of flights.

From 1970 till about 1985, T-shirts of most famous Western rock and pop groups were almost all made and exported from Pakistan. T-Shirt makers in Pakistan got orders from the management and marketers representing major rock musicians such as Rolling Stone, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Aerosmith, etc, and thousands of these T-Shirts were exported to the US and the UK and ended up being sold outside concert halls and arenas in various Western countries.
